Comparison to Last Year’s Smog Levels

Last year, in October, Lahore’s AQI levels were also dangerously high, though slightly lower than what the city is currently facing. The rising industrial activities, vehicular emissions, and agricultural burning in neighbouring areas contribute to the persistent smog problem. The city has struggled to maintain a sustainable approach to controlling pollution, despite numerous initiatives.

Government’s Response to Smog: A Possible School Shutdown?

With the worsening air quality, the government is once again considering shutting down educational institutions. This measure, which was also discussed last year, is aimed at protecting children from exposure to harmful pollutants. If the AQI continues to worsen, schools may be closed for a few days as a temporary solution to limit outdoor exposure for students.

What Can Be Done to Address Lahore’s Smog Problem?

While temporary solutions like school closures may help, Lahore needs a long-term strategy to address its smog crisis. Some possible measures include:

Tree Plantation Drives: Urban green spaces need to be expanded to absorb pollution and improve air quality.

Controlling Industrial Emissions: Stricter regulations and penalties for industries not adhering to pollution control guidelines are essential.

Promoting Clean Transportation: Encouraging electric vehicles and improving public transport could significantly reduce vehicular emissions.

Awareness Campaigns: The government should continue to raise public awareness about the dangers of smog and the steps individuals can take to protect themselves.
